The New Pathways -- Communication & Public Speaking Workshop

Motivate Others in Team Collaboration Level 4 is about strengthening, nurturing, and promoting internal growth in other individuals. We also explored various methods of providing encouragement and helpful feedback to others.

On 26 January 2018, Rotary volunteers from Singapore travelled to Muar in Johor to conduct a full day Communication & Public Speaking Workshop. 5 of them are DTMs from Rotary Eclub of 3310. Working with Rotary Club of Muar, our main aim was to help develop and build great communication skills for the youth. To ensure that the workshop would not have any hitch the following day, I conducted a 3-hour Train the Facilitators session at Rotary Muar Clubhouse that Friday afternoon for 18 selected Interactors from Muar together with our Rotary volunteers.

That afternoon was also the first opportunity for all of them to meet and to get to know each other. I painted a mental picture for them to embrace so that they could see in their mind's eyes the entire event on Saturday. With an estimated 140 registrations, I divided the participants into GREEN and RED Teams. Each coloured team had 3 cluster groups. Each cluster group consisted of 23-24 students, 2 Group Leaders (Interactors) and 1 Rotary volunteer. Each team had another Interactor as the Team Captain. The rest helped me as assistants in logistics, emcee and video/photography.

The two Rotary Presidents were my Co-Trainers. During the afternoon training, we went through the entire programme so that all the facilitators knew the flow of event and that the event would run smoothly the following day. It was a good opportunity to mix and mingle, get to know each other up close, have fun, as we went through similar ice-breaking activities.

At 7.30am on Saturday morning, all the facilitators were there, up and early, to help with registration and room setup. The full day workshop started at 8.30am and ended at 5.30pm. It was held in the training hall of Pejabat Pendidikan Daerah Muar (Muar District Education Office).

A total of 142 students from 15 secondary schools in Muar and Ledang District came. Also present were officers from District Education Office (PPD) and 12 teachers from the schools. The students paid a nominal sum of RM10 which included a workbook, breakfast, lunch and 2 tea breaks.

The participants learned about the different types of communication through various exciting ice-breaking games and activities. After the morning tea break, the atmosphere changed! Initially, most of them were not very confident and comfortable. Things got better and better as everyone started to open up to each other.

There were plenty of opportunities for students to do presentations, practice public speaking and impromptu speeches in front of their respective cluster groups. As part of the learning outcomes, participants were also able to identify their own communication style and had to make presentations on the ways to communicate with different types.

The workshop was very interactive and participative from the students' perspective. They had great fun. There was a huge improvement in performance for the students from the morning session when they were still hesitant to the evening where they were eager to showcase their speaking and communication abilities.

In the final segment, we had a friendly speech contest between the GREEN and RED Teams. The best speaker from each cluster group was chosen to represent their coloured team. Prizes were presented to both winners and runner-ups. The two Captains gave their valediction speeches on behalf of their respective teams. They received a Breakthrough gold medallion for the effort. An experienced Rotarian shared some points for improvements with the contestants while the Rotary Presidents did the same for each of the valediction speakers.

On the whole, this workshop was a very worthwhile project. It had benefited many students... including the adults present. We plan to do more similar workshops in partnership with other Rotary and Interact Clubs in the future!
