The New Pathways -- Connecting with EASB Toastmasters

On 30 November 2017, I had the privilege to visit EASB Toastmasters Club again. I was involved in the charter of this club back in 2010 when I was President, YMCA Toastmasters Club.

Over the years, the profile of the student population has changed somewhat. EASB used to have many students coming from China and India. Today, they come mostly from ASEAN countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Indonesia.

That said, the quality of the students remains unchanged. The students are very focused on their studies as EASB have very strict rules. In fact, most of them graduated with good grades from reputable twinned universities.

The senior management, Dr Andrew Chua, CEO and Principal of EASB together with Dr Tan Jing Hee, Executive Director and Chairman of Academic Board, are very supportive of the Toastmasters movement. EASB students are encouraged to join at subsidized rates as part of their ECA (extra curricular activities).

Although recruitment of members has never been a problem, getting students to do project speeches can be a challenge. Most of the students come from countries where English is either a second or third language! My task in connecting with them was to adopt a facilitation style of encouragement and support. I also shared the vision on why learning and mastering good communication skills are useful life skills...
